This Is a Pro-Amnesty Blog
In the event that it wasn’t totally obvious, I’d like to state explicitly that as the main contributor to this website I will fully support a sweeping pardon of undocumented workers. Any position that denies amnesty to the millions of immigrants from around the world is borne out of bigotry, xenophobia, and racism.
During one of the lulls on my drive through rural New York today, I tuned into a local talk radio station in time to catch a little of “The Radio Factor”, in which some piece of flesh passing for a racist human being filled in for the usual piece of shit host. He fielded calls that lamented the fact that whites will no longer be the majority race of the United States within a couple generations.
Regardless of how valid these concerns are, I fear that this is how many who are calling for us to enforce our unenforceable immigration laws really feel. They are drawing a recognizable line based on race and nationality, and I refuse to be on the side of the crackers.

No day laborers? No brick man, No yard man, my painter? All in federal prison. I’m thinking abut the low cost prison beautification and improvements that could get done, what with most contractors in NOLA and the mid east and all.

I liked what the LA County Sherrif said yesterday: Amercians don’t realize how much a shut the borders down policy is going to cost them. Perhaps when they have to raise taxes to do it, people like Malkin will shut up.
Basically if they openned the border in a guest worker system folks who are coming in through that program aren’t going to be sneaking around messing up the security issue of keeping bad folks out. In other words: terrorists are going to be the only ones out in the desert trying to get over the border at night.

You don’t think it’s a tad unfair to say denying amnesty to illegal immigrants is bigoted, xenophobic, and racist? Do you honestly think it’s in accordance with current immigration law to just say “Hey, world! Don’t bother with the legal system and all that paper work! Just walk on over and be a citizen automatically!”? I harbor hatred for no one based on race, I just want an organized system by which anyone who wishes to come to our country can - by earning the right. It’s a privelige to be allowed citizenship in any country you immigrate to. No one should be allowed to defy a country’s immigration law (or any law, for that matter) and not be reprimanded. They broke the law and they need to be punished. I don’t care what the color of their skin is or where they’ve come from.
Of course, I’m sure most of your readership will just say I’m a bigot and write me off. That’s what left-wingers do when it comes to immigration. You’d rather see a borderless America where anyone can come and go freely, and you’ll do anything to discredit those who oppose your way of thinking, including denying that anyone who thinks differently than you is anything more than a madman or pure evil. But I really just hope you’d reconsider trying to label anyone with a different POV as inherently bad - last time I checked, dissent was crucial to a democracy such as our own.

I agree with you Ryan. What I find amazing is that many of racists claim only to be anti-illegal immigration. They claim to have no problem with legal immigration. In reality, they never advocate legal immigration but say this to not appear racist. They never support an increase in legal immigration and infact want to reduce it further. This issue about “enforcing the law” is just a cover to hide their racist intentions. I am not saying that everybody who opposes illegal immigration is racist but a large number of them are infact bigots.

Rich, since you start off with what is designed to appear to be a fair attempt at a discussion, I would ask what’s the basis for earning the privilege of immigrating to this country? Property? Ability to speak English? Ability to fill out the paperwork?
But since you then degenerate into patently hypocritical and self-negating horse manure (dissent is crucial to democracy, unless someone other than you is talking–niiiiiice), I won’t bother.
Do please feel free to articulate a specific anti-immigration point of view that isn’t somehow based on racism. You haven’t advocated racism in your comment–but you haven’t really advocated anything else, either, except that somehow you’re being oppressed.

What is so wrong with open borders? Sure it makes it more difficult to engineer an economy, but I thought an engineered economy was a bad thing in the eyes of the right. Isn’t that one of the reasons communism was so evil: it tried to engineer an economy and closed the free market?
I haven’t heard one argument against open borders that doesn’t include the phrase “they’re stealing our jobs!” I did hear one compelling interview with a guy in LA who made the point that wages are driven downward by illegal immigrants, but since when has the Republican party been concerned with the little guy? Note the last time minimum wage was raised==BUT WAIT THAT’S ENGINEERING THE ECONOMY AND THAT IS BAD BAD BAD.
The ludicrous and contradictory arguments surrounding all this indicate a hidden agenda: racism and fear of those dirty, disease-ridden fereners! (You can look up the disease argument if you wish.) See why your anti-illegal imigration arguments only are suspect, Rich?

Landru…
I am not trying to stop anyone’s right to dissent. I meant to say that making a statement such as “Any position that denies amnesty to the millions of immigrants from around the world is borne out of bigotry, xenophobia, and racism.” is an attempt to make people avoid offering a dissenting point of view. It basically says that “anyone who disagrees with my ideas is just plain evil” which is unfair. All sweeping generalizations are unfair.
As for how one earns the right to come to America. Well, I feel that they should be able to speak the most widely spoken language (in this case English), should have a clean slate as far as criminal records go, and should be able to, upon their final move to America, hold a job that will pay them well enough to be able to pay taxes just like any other citizen does.
I am not, as you seem to think, anti-immigration. I am anti-ILLEGAL immigration. Emphasis obviously on ILLEGAL. Our country has a set of laws that dictate the ways that people can apply for and recieve legal citizen status. I simply feel that our laws should be enforced, which means we need to do everything we can to stop illegal immigration.
It is a simple fact that it is easier for illegal immigrants to get jobs. They, being new to America, are often easily swindled by employers into working for very little. This is not to imply that immigrants are dumb or fools. They’re in a foreign land after years living in a country that was probably very different, and they are unlikely to know how things work in this new country.
Because they work cheaper, employers take in illegal immigrants much more often then they take in legal citizens who are informed of minimum wage, etc. Some people say that illegal immigrants do jobs that legal citizens “wouldn’t do”. I believe that there are plenty of citizens living below the poverty line who would gladly take any job they could get. But those jobs go out to cheaper workers.
But please don’t misunderstand. I’m not angry at illegal immigrants as people. I’m just angry that they aren’t getting more encouragement to follow the legal path to citizenship. I’m also upset that the borders of our country aren’t tighter, which is a fault of our own government’s lack of conviction on the issue.
I am all for legal immigration. Yes, the legal path to US citizenship is long and complicated, but there’s a long line of people wanting to come here and it takes a lot of time to sift through all the papers and determine whether or not each individual fits within the guidelines. Anyone who really wants to come here and be a good, law-abiding citizen, though, would say it’s worth it. My great-uncle, a Filipino immigrant, agrees with that sentiment, as do several of my friends - folks who came to America from Pakistan. I’ve never heard someone say “that wasn’t worth it” after going through the legal process.

As a career motel maid who’s worked with far more immigrants and children of immigrants than other native-born American citizens, I can testify to both the notion that “we” will indeed take those jobs, but also that “we” won’t take enough of them. Not that this surprises me. To make a living on a motel maid’s wages, you have to have pretty much everybody in the household working too. So hotels hire cousins and sisters and mothers and aunts and daughters, because there’s almost no walk-in applications. They’re constantly canvassing the staff to find out if anyone else needs a job.
As far as the guest worker program goes, it’s basically indentured servitude. I’ve said this before, and I’ll keep saying it until people listen. Even green card employees can be intimidated into not filing comp claims or reporting workplace accidents or demanding overtime (and in some cases even just refusing to work off the clock) by the threat of calling immigration officials.
A good many of these people don’t speak English that well, which shouldn’t surprise anyone, if you’re working three jobs, who has time for ESL classes? They’re easily exploitable. Even *I* don’t know exactly what the rights are of a citizen vs a naturalized citizen vs a green card vs a work visa. It’s not my job on the line, and even I won’t push an issue if I think it might get someone else fired.
A guest worker program adds another layer of exploitation. If someone’s fired, under the current system, they can find a new job. If they’re fired as a guest worker, they’re deported. Just that much more reason to shut up when your boss insists you wash his car, and I’ve seen that happen more than once.
Guest worker systems won’t work. They’re slavery with paperwork. Not only do they make it easier to exploit workers, they grant another degree of protection to abusive employers.
It shames me to see liberals support guest worker programs. I can only assume that they haven’t thought about the execution of it, or are hoping there will be safeguards in place that it’s not in the interests of the people who pay for our laws to create. In the current climate, any guest worker program will favor employers over immigrants, and any legislator who tries to safeguard immigrant employee rights will be vilified as an America hater or worse.
I admit I’m somewhat concerned about the transformation of the US, mostly because I don’t have any aptitude for languages and can’t talk very well with first generation immigrants (most of whom in my area speak Spanish). But I also know that their sons and daughters speak English and Spanish, and their grandsons and granddaughters speak English near exclusively. This is the way immigration has always worked in this country. I don’t see any reason for it to change.
Comment by D. Sidhe — July 7, 2006 @ 4:13 pm
The issue for me is the exploitation of workers, both legal and illegal. If amnesty can provide a way to eliminate such exploitation, as I think it would, then I am all for it, and good for you.
Rich, being an American citizen should not be made into a privilege or some kind of prize. Frankly, in this day and age, I am an American by birth, not by choice, and I think it is fair to say anyone who would extoll the virtues of “earning” citizenship worries me.
Comment by FireDrew — July 9, 2006 @ 10:23 am
FireDrew…
I respect your views on the issue, but I respectfully disagree with you. I think that anyone who wishes to immigrate from one country to another should earn the right to be a citizen of that other country. It’s not about favoring natural born citizens over immigrants. Really, I think it’s more about picking out bad people (criminals) and keeping them out, and about making sure that any person who does come here can be an efficient member of society, just like any other person in that country.
Is it OK to say I’m worried that you’re worried? ;) Perhaps it’s just best to agree to disagree?
Comment by Rich — July 9, 2006 @ 10:01 pm
what about overpopulation? high levels of immigration legal and illegal, are currently the driving force behind the fact that U.S. population growth is not environmentaly sustainable. Forget all this crap about racsim and xenophobia, it’s not about who comes to the U.S. but how many.
Comment by Jim — January 11, 2008 @ 3:56 pm
Overpopulation in the US is one of the primary reasons we have environmental degradation, economic disparity, and an overall decline in quality of life for the poor and middle class. It exacerbates sprawl, congestion, crime, ruthless competative behavior, our national carbon footprint, and an erosion of our civil liberties as the country tries to manage 300 million plus people all vying for smaller pieces of the national pie. It’s not a question of who comes here but how many.
