We really didn’t do much to improve life in Afghanistan, did we?

Oh, you got us good

For the record, the earliest peace symbols did in fact look like the Mercedes insignia. The protestors are guilty of nothing more than anachronism, despite Malkin’s gotcha moment.

Still, it was back in the days when my piano teacher’s waiting area was filled with millenialist comic books that I first read how the peace sign resulted from the initiation ritual of satanic baby-killing cults. New initiates would hold a cross upside down and snap the arms downwards to indicate their break from Christianity - and this tradition led to the peace sign, linking forever the peace movement with Satanism in the minds of piano students with weaker bullshit detectors than my own.

I do remember, though, wondering why one of the comic books, dating to the seventies, predicted the world was going to end three years earlier than the day I was sitting waiting for my turn to play “Clair de Lune.”

Update: LA informs me it’s “Au Clair de la Lune.” Not the way I used to play it.
